If Native folks are making it to sell to white people with the approval of their tribe, it’s not “appropriation”–its support and appreciation! This always confused me, too, because like. Do brits not *move*? My accent and diction are a horrifying hodgepodge because I was a child in the cajun part of the american south, an adolescent and young adult in the appalachian part, and then moved to New England as an adult and have lived here since (further, my parents were appalachian and new englander). Added to that, i watched a *lot* of tv as a kid and picked up aspects of tv’s weird region-less diction mixed with southern california. It would be weird if the way I talked *wasn’t* a semi-unique mess that’s hard to definitively place.
Does that not happen with these apparently hyper-specific British accents? Brits, do y'all not get people who pronounce one word in one region-specific way and another word in a way specific to a completely different region, because they lived both places?

I can answer this! I was born in Pontypridd (Wales), moved to London (England) when I was 5, posh south England when I was 10, Belfast (Northern Ireland) when I was 17 and Dublin (Ireland) at 28.
The vast majority of British and Irish people think I sound Australian.
The one exception is when people try to fake an American southern accent, because Southerners absolutely do pay attention. You can’t go with a Texan southern accent if the character is from Mississippi, and Georgia accents are a whole thing, and Louisiana has two different accents, etc.
I mean, there’s a difference between a New York and a Philly accent, too.
Yeah. Americans WILL call you out on the “born and bred in ___ and never left” characters’ accents. You have specified too much to not match the accent AND the right verbiage/ idioms.
BUT! Moving around is a common enough thing here that when a character says, “I moved around a lot,” or, “I was raised by the TV!” we all think 'non-specific American accent’ and then move on, giving it no further thought.

When you feed the AI which is BASED ON STOLEN ART, you are telling thieves that youâre cool with art being stolen as long as you get something temporary, free and momentarily cool.
AI is like a child learning art who cannot learn whether something is right or wrong.
the AI will see watermarks, and instead of saying âhey, mom, why are these words in the corner of the picture?â itâll think âsometimes art just has random word-shaped text in the corner, and thatâs normalâ and then replicate it.

AI does not use art as âsamples.â AI does not âmanipulate art beyond recognition.â AI does not even remember that your art exists. It does not have that capacity. AI uses your art to learn the patterns of pixels that art tends to contain, develops a complicated statistical model of what art tends to look like, and then spits out statistically likely patterns of pixels that correlate with the description in its prompt. This is all it knows and all it has the capacity to know, it cannot possibly copy your art, only the tendencies you have as an artist.
This isnât a defense of AI art models. Theyâre blind idiots spitting out images that mostly approximate something somebody might have made. They donât replicate watermarks because theyâre plagiarizing watermarked art the way a human might sample or trace a piece of art, they replicate watermarks because, like mortimermcmirestinks says, they do not understand the difference between watermarks and intended parts of the image. They do not understand content at all except in the sense that certain patterns are correlated with certain keywords. This is why most AI art sucks and sucks in the specific ways it does: Because it replicates patterns without understanding why those patterns exist, and so you get extra fingers and 7-pack abs and incoherent ornamentation and illegible watermarks.
And sometimes, an AI model will in fact spit out an exact or nearly-exact copy of something in its training data. Not because it copied it consciously, not only is it not conscious but oncr again it does not actually remember any specific piece art. It does it because itâs learned to produce statistically probable images and most things which exist are things which are likely to exist.
AI isnât an automatic collage machine. Itâs an âeh, close enoughâ machine. Which makes it a powerful tool for deskilling labor, it allows corporations to cut corners which could not previously be cut and sacrifice human values which could not previously be sacrificed. And itâs built on the back of both systematic privacy violations and exploiting the real labour of actual human artists. All of this is extremely bad, of course, but it is not at all the same kind of bad vaspider is saying it is, and I for one am a big proponent of criticizing things for their actual flaws instead of making up new accusations not grounded in reality.
AI canât steal any specific piece of your art, nor can it actually do your job as an artist, but it can steal that job anyways.

The point is that the reproduction of the watermarks indicates that they are trained on watermarked art, that is, art which they do not have permission to use.
